What's Passing?

The term 'passing' is when someone is perceived as a gender they identify as. For example, a transgender man is passing if he is perceived as a man. And yes, it's possible to pass.

This is the pinnacle goal a transgender person would seek in their transition, to be perceived and treated as the gender they want to be. Me and my friends worked together to provide this guide to fellow trans teens. So thank you to all whom helped me out with writing this article.

Maximizing the Effects of HRT

When it comes to maximizing the effects of testosterone, the first thing you should know is that you need to care and put effort into your body. Don't expect wildly good results when you only take HRT to meet them. I'll be covering two topics in this article, staying lean and weight cycling. Both having to do with the male fat redistribution aspects of testosterone.

Staying lean is important because of Aromatase and to get rid of the fat covering the muscle, which would enhance your overall masculine appearance.

Aromatase describes the bodily process of converting testosterone into estrogen. When the body possesses too much testosterone it rids it by converting the excess into estrogen. It's also important to note that body fat is a major source for Aromatase, so the more you weigh the more testosterone will be converted to estrogen. Which is why I encourage trans males to be lean, especially if they are obese. Not only can this improve your health but maximize the results out of testosterone.

As for the muscles, ridding yourself of unhealthy ranges of bodyfat will enhance your appearance and give you more potential to look masculine. These are just some good tips I wanted to mention.

Note: Please make sure you eat and practice healthy dieting. I don't want anyone to develop any eating disorders.

Weight cycling is the practice of repeatedly losing and regaining body weight. For those whom went through or completed male puberty, this is done to get rid of the female distributed fat in exchange for male distributed fat. Of course, this only works if you're taking testosterone. Male distributed fat pertains to the upper body, notably the stomach and shoulders. This is what creates the male body shape, the inverted triangle or square shape. Which is why men have bigger waists, arms, necks and shoulders over women. Of course, the amount of muscle mass men usually possess plays a significant role in this. Women on the other hand, typically have more fat pertaining to the lower body, notably the hips, thighs and bottom butt region. Creating a more hourglass shape.

So if you notice you have female distributed fat, you could try practice weight cycling and research more about compatible diets.

Hard Truths

Hard Truths are concepts or ideas that are difficult to acknowledge/accept, even though they're true. Some of these even being controversial. However I still think these are useful for you to know, as I wish I was told to acknowledge this when I first started transitioning.

The first social transitioning advice, dress like how other men dress.

If you go out in public wearing masculine defined clothing but men themselves don't actually wear these clothing in real life, you're going to look "weird." Especially if you wear clothing that alternate/fantasy men are seen stereotypically wearing, like the guys in video games or media like anime. Examples would be wearing multiple piercings, emo accessories like chokers and unnaturally dyed colored hair. This also goes for makeup, don't wear makeup unless you want others to think you're feminine. This can definitely impede your passing since makeup is a woman's thing. No, I'm not saying makeup is only for women I'm saying it's something typically only women use.

Instead, look into how men typically dress in real life. I also suggest looking into the male gaze. Now what's the male gaze? The male gaze describes the way men look at and prefer things. An example of the male gaze would be how in an action film, the movie caters to the male audience by showing the male protagonist's strength and revering devotion to their personal cause, which invites connection from the audience. We would describe this scene with male gaze, since it's what men want to see in a film. This matters because it helps to look at yourself through the male gaze, what men want to see in themselves as a man.

So before dressing yourself, don't think about what will look 'hot' or what looks most similar to that animation character you like. Think about what other guys wear and it should be fairly basic, think about the male gaze.

Gender socialization is one of the most important aspects to passing. It's also one of the two hard truths I want to clarify.

Gender socialization is the learnt behavior and attitudes of a gender, as defined by our culture. An example would be a boy with male socialization, since he's socialized as a boy he may participate in stereotypic male behaviorisms like being more dominant, liking to play with cars, video games and enjoying sports shows.

When it comes to passing, fitting in with men is detrimental. If you do not act like a man, people are less likely to see you as a man. This is why I label gender socialization as one of the harder truths to accept. I recommend self-reflecting upon your activities, conduct and childhood to see how feminine you are. How many men do you talk to? How many male friends do you have? Do others consider you masculine?

Note: This section is not asking you to change who you are or how you naturally behave, but rather to provide insight on where people may see you as 'womanly' or as 'feminine' This can aid your passing if you decide to alter these aspects.
